Although it's 14 years old, I've grown very attached to my Denon CD player and when it stopped playing discs I was most upset. The most probable cause was a defective laser/lens assembly, so I found out that it's actually a generic Sony unit - the KSS-240A - which is still widely available. A quick visit to eBay and £20 later, and I soon had a new unit waiting to be fitted. I wasn't really sure how to do it, or even if it would work, but I figured the best way to learn was to try it!
See my Flickr set here.
Huh? Is that it? Five and a half lines and a link to Flickr? And here's me settling down with a brew expecting a full page "How To" with a bullet pointed list of procedures, tools used (inc brand), price and source of said replacement part + repair time involved (including any tea breaks with type of biscuit/snack imbibed, calorific value and carb/protein breakdown). That aside though, and as I mentioned on your Flickr set, I am enjoying the Lacey bent for "repair over replacement" and am wondering how far this is going to go?I've also successfully managed to create a comment longer then the actual blog post it pertains too, I could go on but I'm just pushing for page space so I'll stop now, plus I'm very hungry and the Thai takeaway across the street is calling me....
ReplyDeleteYes indeed, dude - why spend hundreds when you can "make do and mend" for £20? If the spare part hadn't been available I'd have had no choice, but for that amount of money I thought it was worth a try.As for step-by-step instructions, I figured my comments under each photo in the set would suffice? No need to repeat myself on here. And if you really are interested, the lens came from here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/KSS-240A-Sony-Laser-Assembly-Denon-Laser-KSS240-KSS240A_W0QQitemZ350110285655QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET?hash=item518432ff57&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 and the whole thing took me about 30 minutes from start to finish.
ReplyDeleteThat's a result for 30 minutes, substantial generation of informative online content and resulting referenced geekery...! I'm seeing a potential side-line developing - "Mr Lacey's gadget repair service":-)
ReplyDelete@daleythecat - Hi, thanks for dropping by, glad the instructions were useful! No idea what the squeak might be - if you do decide to lubricate it, be very careful not to get it near the lens otherwise you'll be back to square one!!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to thankyou for the illustrated instructions for replacing the lazer lens assembly in the Denon CD player. Excellent pictures and minimal verbage was clear and gave me the confidence. Job's done and the Denon is happy again - and so are me and my wife. Great help! Thanks again. Adrian Lyndsay
ReplyDeleteHi Adrian - Glad that the instructions were of assistance! Honestly didn't know when I took the photos whether anyone would be in the same position as me, but I'm glad people are finding them useful. Thanks for dropping by.
ReplyDelete[...] last month, I had been feeling pretty good about my ability to fix broken tech. Not only had I mended my old CD player but I’d now brought an Xbox back from the [...]
ReplyDeleteHi Phil, What else can I say other than what has already been posted by satisfied Denon cd-player self-repair folk...thanks a million for the brilliant tutorial. Cheers, Frank.
ReplyDeleteHi Frank - once again, I'm amazed that anybody has seen (let alone followed!) my instructions, but I'm very pleased that you found them useful! Thanks for taking the time to comment, it's much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteHurrah - it works. Slightly worryingly when I got the bit it was a NKS 240A (as opposed to the KSS 240A.) Followed instructions (useful tip using bluetac!) and all slotted together easily. Didn't work the first time and I thought the different part number was to blame, but no I just needed click down the top of the transport a bit more. Thanks Phil, I am now listing to a revived CD player - plays better than it has in years!
ReplyDeleteHi Will - I take it that the NKS 240A is working just fine? Don't know what the difference is between that and the KSS 240A but if it works then that's useful to know. Glad you found the instructions useful.
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil, my UCD-F88 is working perfec now

Hope it is the failure.
Thanks
I am very disappointed . Replacing laser didn't help . The symptoms are srictly the same . Think it is the laser power .
ReplyDeleteTo be continued ...
If you start with the transport mechanism open the lens can be removed from the top without disconnecting and removing the transport mechanism.
